Project #3 : A P-90 on a Strat

Pourrais-je avoir un peu de Gibson ?

Dans mon élan de customisation, j'ai eu envie de changer radicalement de son. Avoir une Strat avec un son proche d'une Gibson, pourquoi pas ?

 

J'ai écouté différents micros sur le site de Seymour Duncan, et j'ai adoré le Phat Cat, un micro P-90 au format humbucker pour Stratocaster... le rêve.

 

Remarque sur le format humbucker : tout est relatif. Il a fallu retailler un peu le trou d'origine, car bien que la largeur et la longueur du Phat Cat soient quasiment les mêmes qu'un humbucker classique, il est en fait bien plus "carré".

Thrilled by all these custom details, I thought I could now radically change my sound. Why not having a Strat that sounds almost like a Gibson?


I went on the Seymour Duncan website and listened to many pickup until I fell on the Phat cat, a humbucker-size P-90 for Stratocaster... What a dream.


I want to point that humbucker-size is not quite true. Even though the length and width are the same, the Phat Cat is squarer than the original shape of the hole, I had to drill it to push the pickup through.


Seconde étape : le Phat Cat, comme tout P-90, est un micro à simple bobinage. Il dispose d'une masse (tresse) et d'un point chaud (fil conducteur à l'intérieur de la tresse). Pour le connecter correctement, il suffit de souder la tresse sur le potentiomètre de volume et le point chaud au plot correspondant à la position chevalet du switch.

Next step : The Phat Cat is a P-90 and as most of them, it is a single coil that only has 2 conductors : the ground (braided) and the hot wire (within the braid). To mount it correctly, you only have to solder the braid to the volume pot and the hot wire to the lug on the switch for the bridge pickup.


Tests

On a du corps, de la présence, un son plus chaud qu'avec le SH-6, mais brillant. On n'a pas d'écart de volume entre les différents micros, ce qui est très positif compte tenu que les deux autres micros sont des humbuckers, naturellement plus puissants.

En revanche, c'est le retour de la radio quand on utilise uniquement le P-90. Comme c'est un simple bobinage, il ne dispose pas de deux bobines pour annuler les parasites électromagnétiques.

Entre la guitare utilisée habituellement pour travailler avec cette chaine du son, et la mienne, c'est une grosse déception. La guitare elle-même manque de gain, et sonne  brillant comme une Stratocaster au lieu du gras auquel je m'attendais.

Rien à faire, le son reste brillant et très clair, et manque toujours de puissance. L'autre Strat essayée à travers mon ampli avait plus de pêche que la mienne, même si la différence était moins flagrante qu'avec la guitare précédente sur le Mesa.

Tests

You feel tighter lows and a warmer sound than with the SH-6, but bright. There is almost no volume difference between the pickups, which is good news since the other two are humbuckers and so naturally more powerful.

But, when you play only with the P-90, the guitar hums a lot again. This is because it is a single coil and it cannot cancel electromagnetic parasites.

There is a hell of a difference between the guitar usually played with this setup, and mine was very disappointing. It lacks power, sounds very much like a Stratocaster instead of sounding as thick as it did at home.

Well, my guitar definitely sounds like a Stratocaster, bright and clean, and lacks power as well. I tried another Strat through the amp and it sounds more powerful than mine, even though there is less difference than with the previous guitar with the Mesa.


Conclusion : N'est pas Gibson qui veut !

On a mis en évidence avec ces tests différentes choses

  • Les haut-parleurs et les amplis influencent vraiment le son de l'instrument, même si on retrouve des constantes (la brillance).
  • La puissance et le sustain dépendent de la lutherie. En effet, la guitare la plus puissante est vide à l'intérieur...
  • Le manque de puissance peut aussi être dû à l'électronique.

Le câblage de cette guitare a été pensé pour le SH-6. Il n'y a pas forcément d'intérêt modifier la couleur du Phat Cat, ni à avoir des potentiomètres aussi gros.

Pour la couleur, le montage" bleed cap" ramène beaucoup d'aigus, ce qui finalement gênant car on peine à retrouver des basses à faible volume.

 

 J'ai certainement intérêt à :

  • Enlever le bleed cap, puis essayer.
  • Si ça n'apporte pas grand-chose, revenir à un câblage où les tones modifient le son des trois micros
  • Si après essai je n'ai pas retrouvé la puissance, revenir aux valeurs d'origine des potentiomètres.

Conclusion : You can't be Gibson if don't have it !

With those tests, we brought several things to light:

  • The speakers and amps you use definitely color the sound of your instrument, even if we did find brightness every time.
  • Power and sustain depend on the making of the instrument. The most powerful guitar has a hollow body...
  • The lack of power may be due to the electronics

The wiring of this guitar was made for the SH-6. It might not be interesting anymore to tweak the sound of the Phat Cat, or to have large potentiometers.

For brightness, the bleed cap adds a lot of treble, which is disturbing in the end as you struggle to hear the lows at low level.


I probably should:

  • Take the bleed cap off and see if it changes something
  • If not, I'll go back to the previous wiring when both tones tweaked all the pickups.
  • If it doesn't help with the lack of power, I'll use the original pots again.
